Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff speaks on reproductive rights in Tucson
TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) - Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff campaigned in Tucson on Thursday night as part of the Harris-Walz New Way Forward Battleground Tour.
Emhoff took aim at Donald Trump, who held a rally in Tucson earlier in the day, on the issue of reproductive freedom.
Supporters of Kamala Harris filled the Stonebridge Events Center to hear from Emhoff about Harris’ agenda for reproductive rights.
“I am hoping he will talk about how it is so important for women to have the freedom to choose what they want to do with their bodies,” said attendee Susan Schwartz before the event.
On stage, Emhoff further took aim at Trump’s and Roe v. Wade.
“We’ve been living in this Dobb’s hellscape for the past 2 1/2 years caused by Donald Trump. It’s a Trump abortion ban,” said Emhoff.
One attendee added that reproductive rights is an important issue to her as she was a teenager at the time of Roe v. Wade passage.
“It just made reproductive health so much better and reproductive health is not just about abortion. Reproductive health for me is about all the issues, birth control and not just women’s birth control, supporting planned parenthood, just reproductive health in general,” said Ann Lettes, another attendee.
Emhoff alluded that if the country sees a Trump-Vance win in November, it will harm more women.
“Doctors are leaving states where they cannot fully practice medicine, and when you have doctors leaving states, it’s not just about abortions, it’s about pap smears and basic healthcare. So you’re going to see problems arise,” said Emhoff.
He added that reproductive freedom should not be a controversial issue.
“There’s such a small percent of extremists that actually want this, the vast majority of Americans do not want to dismantle women’s reproductive rights and make women somehow less than,” said Emhoff.
With less than 60 days until the election, Emhoff left supporters with one overarching message, getting out to vote in November.
“If you care about freedom, this issue and so many others, we got to get out and vote. We can vote our way out of this,” said Emhoff.
He wraps up a week of campaigning in Central Florida on Friday.
