PHOENIX (AZFamily) — If you haven’t registered to vote yet, time is running out. Arizona’s voter registration deadline is Oct. 7.

Arizona and Maricopa County require all voters to register 29 days before an election in order to cast a ballot. So far, nearly 2.5 million people are registered to vote in Maricopa County.

Maricopa County estimated voter breakdown

  • 880,000 are registered as Republicans
  • 872,000 are registered as independent (or party not designated)
  • 722,000 are registered as Democrats

Maricopa County is the second-largest voting jurisdiction in the U.S. and represents more than 60% of the state’s registered voters.

Arizona remains a swing state for this election. With total voter registration numbers for all parties close together, every vote will be crucial in deciding which way Arizona will vote in federal, state and local races.

“It’s something that makes Arizona a highly contested state. It’s why you see so many campaign signs. So many fundraising events. So many different politicians come to Maricopa County because this really is where Arizona’s decision will be made,” Taylor Kinnerup, with the Maricopa County Recorder’s Office, said.

“Even if you’re not convinced you want to vote. Even if you don’t know who you want to vote for but it’s something you’re considering, make sure you’re ahead of those deadlines because that’s going to save you in the long run,” Kinnerup said.
