Phoenix couple shares story about drug addiction to help others
“There is help”
PHOENIX (AZFamily) — For years, Margaret Fitzgerald and Danny Holder struggled with methamphetamine and other drug use after losing custody of their son nearly five years ago.
“I just went through a deep depression, and drugs pretty much help me get through each day,” Fitzgerald said.
The couple said they were put on the streets and eventually lost custody of their newborn daughter.
“After a few years, it just got to a point where I didn’t care if we had a place. It was just pretty much just stay high, get through the day, OK, we can get through another day. Just get high,” Fitzgerald said.
It wasn’t until the couple came across Community Bridges Inc., an addiction and recovery center in Arizona.
“When we got here, it was big weight off our shoulders,” Fitzgerald said.
Since 1982, CBI has helped thousands of people recover from addiction.
Recently, they opened up their Rio Fresco location off the Interstate 10 freeway and 24th Street in Phoenix. It provides temporary housing to those struggling with addiction and homelessness.
“We serve them three meals a day. We help them get connected to a case manager. We initiate some goals. We let them pick what their goals are,” said Anne Marie, the senior director of community outreach at CBI.
That’s why Fitzgerald and Holder want to share their story in honor of National Recovery Month.
They want to let people know that there are resources and help available.
“There is help. Like we’re living proof that there is help,” Fitzgerald said.
The couple said that they’ve now been 10 months sober, and in October, they will get their own place and gain custody of their daughter once again.
