CBP officers make largest fentanyl seizure in agency history at Arizona port
LUKEVILLE, AZ (AZFamily) — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers made the largest seizure of fentanyl in the agency’s history at the Arizona-Mexico border this month.
About 4 million blue fentanyl pills, weighing over 1,000 pounds, were seized at the Lukeville Port of Entry on July 1, US CBP said.
“This is the largest fentanyl seizure in CBP’s history, and reflects our unwavering determination to protect our nation and to disrupt the criminal activities of ruthless drug cartels,” said Troy Miller, CBP Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Commissioner. “Every day, CBP officers and agents are on our front line, using their keen instincts and the latest technology to prevent deadly drugs from entering our country and poisoning our communities.”
Officials said a 20-year-old man from Arizona arrived at the port driving a pickup truck that was hauling a recreational vehicle on a trailer. While conducting a thorough inspection, officers noticed anomalies in the frame of the trailer.
With assistance from a canine team, officers found 234 packages of drugs inside the trailer frame.
Days later, on July 12, officers at the same port seized about 270 pounds of methamphetamine from a 45-year-old Mexican citizen.
CBP said the estimated street value for these two seizures is over $12.6 million.
