2 Arizona women found shot to death along highway in Mexico
LUKEVILLE, AZ (AZFamily) — An investigation is underway after two elderly Arizona women were found shot to death along a highway in the Mexican state of Sonora last week.
According to a post by the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Sonora on X (formerly Twitter), the bodies of two women, ages 72 and 82, were found in an overturned Nissan Pathfinder on the Sonoyta-Caborca highway last Friday morning, Aug. 23. The SUV had been damaged by gunfire.
Investigators say the women were traveling from Arizona to the Sonora city of Caborca, where they were originally from, when armed suspects attacked them.
Mexican law enforcement officers have since located a stolen Ford F-150 they believe was used in the attack. The truck was found abandoned in the Sonora town of Quitovac, about 30 miles south of Lukeville, near the Arizona-Mexico border.
In addition, four AK-47 rifles, three ballistic vests, and dozens of rounds of ammunition have been seized. However, no arrests have been made.
A motive for the attack has not been provided, including any possible ties to cartel violence in the region.
It’s unclear where in Arizona they lived, but a State Department spokesperson confirmed to CBS News that one of the women was a U.S. citizen, and the other was a lawful permanent resident.
