PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Arizona border towns are working to strengthen relations with Mexico to grow the workforce, develop, have an economic impact and improve border relations.

Gov. Hobbs and several other leaders sat down to discuss how Arizona and Mexico can work together for sustainable growth. For decades, Arizona and Mexico have collaborated to find unique ways to grow their economies. Looking toward the future, leaders hope to further that growth by capitalizing on opportunities to benefit border towns in both countries.

“We share so much more than just a geographic boundary. So many aspects of our cross-border region are intertwined. Our economy, border security and efficiency, water conservation and supply chain management,” Hobbs said.

Through Arizona State’s School for Transborder Studies, partners discussed workforce growth, development, economic impact and border relations. The goal was to identify challenges and issues for Arizona-Sonora border towns.

“It has been a constant presence in the development of the relationship between Arizona and Sonora, and it has promoted a lot of projects intended to facilitate corporation and development in the region,” said ASU professor Francisco Lara-Valenica.

Lara-Valencia also hopes to raise awareness of water concerns and conservation in border towns: “The cities along the U.S./Mexico border are trying to promote economic growth and development, and water is an essential resource to sustain that.”
