GLENDALE, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) — If you find yourself at Banner Thunderbird, you might see a furry friend roaming the halls. “Gumby” is the hospital’s new facility dog!
Facility dogs are a bit different than typical therapy dogs. Instead, facility dogs play specific roles in coping and treatment plans for patients, such as providing comfort, motivation and distractions during medical procedures.
Gumby is a two-year-old white poodle and has special training from a renowned organization that prepared him for the big job! “Very few hospitals have it, so the fact that we have it here at Banner Thunderbird is beyond excitement for everybody here. Patients, families and staff, everybody has been looking forward to this for a very long time,” said a Banner spokesperson.
Gumby has been preparing for the job since he was a pup, and he’s going to do great! Congrats, Gumby!
