PHOENIX (AZFamily) — As the Valley begins to warm up with 100-degree temperatures, some Arizonans may be looking to go on a road trip to beat the heat. But if you plan on bringing your furry friends along, there are a few things you need to know before you hit the road.

A viewer shared with Arizona’s Family that she was in a car accident with her dog. However, the pup was buckled in, most likely saving her pet’s life.

So, what’s the proper way you can secure your cat or dog? Doug Patriquin, co-founder and CEO of Dr. Kelly’s Surgical Unit, stopped by our studio to give us some advice alongside Simone Cuccurullo and her dog, Daisy, as the model! “Easiest thing to do is make sure they’re strapped into the car. The safest thing is to have them in a crate that’s for travel,” he explained.

While car seats are available for pet owners, Patriquin says a crate is still the safest way to keep your pet secured. “You can stay in close contact with them, but at the end of the day, it’s made out of a slightly flimsy material. So if an accident were to happen, she would not be in the safest position overall,” he said.

Owners are advised not to let dogs roam around the car and leave the front seat for humans. Keep your pet’s head inside and make sure they’re getting plenty of rest stops. Also, never leave your pet alone in a car — ever.
