PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A precious pooch got a happy ending after a daring rescue last month!

In late April, Department of Public Safety trooper Grant Hamilton and ADOT Incident Response Unit Worker Richard DiMaio helped rescue a terrified German shepherd who was running along the emergency shoulder on Interstate 17 near Thomas Road.

Trooper Grant Hamilton and a bystander then came to the rescue! A bystander tossed a McDonald’s McGriddle sandwich to help troopers wrangle the pup, and Trooper Hamilton used the tasty treat to coax the dog toward him. Crews were able to rescue the pooch, who was rewarded with the delicious snack.

Richard’s wife, Florame, shared with Arizona’s Family that their family was lucky enough to adopt the dog from the Maricopa County Animal Shelter. Florame says the German shepherd, lovingly named Freya now, has been a joyous addition to their family. In addition, Freya was also put up for adoption on Richard’s birthday!
