Arizona Humane Society receives $20K grant to help reunite lost pets with their owners
PHOENIX (AZFamily)—The Arizona Humane Society has been awarded $20,000 for its work in providing lifesaving care for sick, injured, and lost pets waiting to be reunited with their owners.
On Monday, AHS announced it received the grant from the nonprofit Petco Love. The funds will be used to cover the cost of food and medical care for the lost pets.
“Not only does this generous, lifesaving investment from Petco Love allow AHS the opportunity to make more families whole again by reuniting them with their four-legged companions, but it also allows us to continue to care for even more sick, injured and abused pets that come through our doors each and every day,” said Francisco Cabello, Director of Animal Assistance & Transport Programs at AHS.
Last year, AHS’s Pet Reunite Program connected over 600 lost pets with their families.
The grant will allow the shelter to care for animals like Skylar, a stray cat who had been lost for over a decade before he was taken to an emergency animal clinic and then moved to the Arizona Humane Society.

AHS says Skylar’s fur was matted, and he had been living on the streets for a while, but his microchip showed that he had been adopted in 2008.
AHS contacted his owner, Monica, who shared that Skylar went missing in 2009. Monica immediately jumped in the car and reunited with her long-lost friend at the Papago Campus.
“Reuniting sick and injured lost pets with their owners is always step one and the best outcome in our effort to help both pets and people,” said Cabello.
