TUCSON, AZ (13 News) —Crews are starting to gain control of a fast-moving wildfire that ignited in southern Arizona.

The Freeman Fire has burned around 32,568 acres and is 85% contained as of Wednesday morning.

The Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management says crews have contained the fire along its north, east, southeast and northwest flanks.

The blaze started on Thursday in the Black Mountains, about 16 miles south of Dudleyville. It was the result of two lightning strikes, which started separate fires that merged.

On Sunday, a “GO status” was lifted for residents in Willow Springs Ranch.

Due to fire operations, the following roads will only be open to local traffic:

  • Willow Springs Road at Highway 77
  • Willow Springs Road at Freeman
  • Freeman at Camino Rio
  • Freeman at Barkerville
  • Freeman at Highway 79

The National Weather Service Phoenix warned residents that they may see hazy skies on Friday due to the large blaze.

Officials said the fire is threatening nearby infrastructure, including high-voltage power lines and a communications tower.

Firefighters are doing burnout operations to protect the buildings.

Crews from Tucson are battling it, and additional resources, including hand crews and engines, have been requested.

High winds prevented aircraft from being launched on Thursday night. The fire was initially called the Wash Fire, but its name was later changed to Freeman.
