Apex Fire burns 3,100 acres southwest of Grand Canyon; 40% contained
COCONINO COUNTY, AZ (AZFamily) —Fire crews are battling a wildfire that has burned thousands of acres in northern Arizona.
The Apex Fire has burned roughly 3,100 acres, about 23 miles southwest of the Grand Canyon. As of Tuesday evening, it was 40% contained.
Around 50 firefighters are battling the blaze, and more resources have been called to help.
The Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management said the fire is being fueled by pinyon pine, juniper and sagebrush.
Crews say outflow winds continue to keep the fire activity high.
On Monday, crews secured the fire’s northeast side and are working to contain the north side to prevent it from entering the Kaibab National Forest.
The flames are not threatening any buildings. However, officials say the fire is burning thick, dark smoke that nearby communities can see.
It is not known what caused the fire.
