Lightning-caused Wood Fire grows to over 7,000 acres near Superior
SUPERIOR, AZ (AZFamily) — A wildfire burning east of the Valley has grown thousands of acres since its start over the weekend.
The Wood Fire was sparked by lightning early Sunday afternoon about five miles southwest of Superior. Tonto National Forest officials say the fire is active and continues to burn in remote terrain. According to wildfire officials, the fire has burned roughly 7,194 acres.
On Thursday, the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office said residents in the neighborhood off North Hing Avenue, East Cliffside Road and North Battle Axe Road Near Ray have been placed in “READY-Prepare Now” status, meaning they should be prepared for an evacuation notice.

Forest Service officials say a flight was conducted, mapping the fire at approximately 2,200 acres as of early Monday afternoon. The agency added that the low-intensity fire is burning in areas inaccessible to firefighters.
One engine, an air attack unit and other ground crews are assigned to the Wood Fire.
