Documents reveal break-in 2 days before unsolved Gilbert teen’s death
GILBERT, AZ (AZFamily) — Arizona’s Family has new information on the unsolved murder of a young woman found dead in her Gilbert apartment more than two years ago.
Gilbert police just released a 350-page, heavily redacted police report on their investigation into Rachel Hansen’s death.
“We want more than anybody here anybody on earth to have the case solved and have answers,” said Kim Hansen, Rachel’s mother.
It’s been two years since Kim lost her daughter. Rachel was just 19 years old when someone shot her to death in her Gilbert apartment.
Kim said she’s not surprised with how redacted the document is considering the body-camera video and 911 transcript released back in August was also redacted.
“I was a little surprised they released it at all. It was kind of my understanding that they weren’t going to,” she said.
In the documents, police detail how Rachel was subleasing her apartment before moving back on June 1, 2022.
The next day, she told her boyfriend she was awakened by someone opening her bedroom door. The person left before she could get out of bed.
She then found a jar of pickles on her kitchen counter that she didn’t buy.
She was killed two days later following this incident.
The report goes into how police submitted numerous redacted items to DNA labs for testing but received no hits.
Gilbert police also interviewed dozens of people, including neighbors, a man in prison in Yuma, and a person in custody at the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation & Reentry.
However, the redactions make it unclear why they were questioned.
The report goes on to say that Gilbert police exhausted all their investigative leads back in February earlier this year.
Rachel’s mother knows someone out there knows what happened and continues to plead for them to come forward.
“Just please, whoever that person is, has to know or have a sense of how difficult it is for us our family and everyone who loved her to wait so long with no answers,” Kim said.
Gilbert police released a statement.
A private investigator has volunteered to help the Hansen family get answers in this case.
Kim said they will continue to raise money for the Silent Witness reward and keep Rachel’s story alive in the hopes that someone will come forward. The current reward is $10,000.
