Authorities identify suspect killed in Tempe police shooting
Officer shot in the arm has been released from hospital, police say
TEMPE, AZ (AZFamily) — A suspect is dead and an officer is recovering after being shot in the arm after a shooting Tuesday night in Tempe.
The shooting happened around 9 p.m. in the area of College Avenue and Curry Road, about two miles north of Arizona State University’s Tempe campus.
Tempe Police said officers conducted a traffic stop and tried to arrest 27-year-old Jason Alexander Fox for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
During that stop, Fox opened fire and struck the officer in his arm. Other officers then returned fire and shot Fox, who died at the scene, authorities said.
The initial responding officer was taken to the hospital before being released Wednesday. His name has not been released.
“Every time an officer is hurt while serving and protecting our city, it resonates throughout our department and the community we serve,” Tempe Police Chief Ken McCoy said. “We are grateful his injuries were not more serious.”
As part of the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team, the Mesa Police Department will lead this investigation. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Tempe Police Department at 480-350-8311. Callers can remain anonymous.
This is the 43rd officer-involved shooting in the Valley and the 72nd in the state in 2024.
