PHOENIX (AZFamily) — An apparent surge of crime in a south Phoenix neighborhood is causing concern among community members.

Phoenix police and fire officials responded to this latest shooting around 7 a.m. near 40th Street and Baseline Road.

Two men were hospitalized with gunshot injuries and police believe more than one suspect may have been involved, but no arrests have been made.

The shooting is worrying neighbors as calls for service in the area in the past year included assaults, burglary, home invasion, and shootings.

A man was shot at the same home last month. Police said in the suspect in that case took off as well.

“I saw it already on the news and I was like that looks like my neighborhood and I walked outside and was like, ‘well, there it is’. And this just happened again like a month ago,” said Kami Bryson, who says she’s lived in the neighborhood her entire life. “It just makes everybody really nervous to even walk your dogs, juts walk down the street. It’s just nerve wracking. You can’t walk at night, in the morning because it’s just going to be something.”

Another neighbor didn’t want to show her face. “It happens pretty often,” she said. “They’re here all the time.”

She share that’s she’s often grown suspicious about the people living at the home. Although she didn’t know about Thursday’s shooting until later in the day, she said she wasn’t surprised to learn two men had been shot and seriously injured.

“I’ve noticed that there is a lot of people living in there. Obviously there is always police coming and going. There’s always cars coming and going, parking,” the anonymous neighbor said.

The ongoing traffic in the neighborhood, she says, has even resulted in vandalism.

“They be lighting their trees on fire. There was a lady who got stuck up on the tree and the ambulance had to come and get her down. I guess she wasn’t in the right mind. They go and steal our copper from the Wi-Fi and the Wi-Fi is sometimes down.”
