Man accused of shooting 2 Phoenix police officers, killing 1, pleads not guilty
PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The suspect who allegedly shot two Phoenix police officers last month, one of whom died, appeared in court on Friday morning.
An attorney for 41-year-old Saul Bal entered a not-guilty plea on his behalf during an arraignment hearing.

Bal is accused of shooting two police officers who responded to reports of a car break-in near 16th Street and McDowell Road on Sept. 3. Both were rushed to a hospital with serious injuries.
Officer Matthew Haney was treated and released soon after. However, Officer Zane Coolidge was more severely wounded, and he died three days later.

Bal was arrested following the shooting and later indicted on multiple felonies, including:
- First-degree murder
- Attempt to commit first-degree murder
- Aggravated Assault
- First-degree burglary
- Misconduct involving weapons
He’s expected back in court on Nov. 20.

Officer Coolidge, 29, was laid to rest on Sept. 18. He leaves behind a wife and baby daughter.
