Rare excessive heat warnings in October prompt Phoenix trail closures
PHOENIX (AZFamily) — This extreme heat in the Valley is yet to “fall” this fall, and it’s causing some disruptions.
Phoenix city officials announced hiking trails at Piestewa Peak and Camelback Mountain will be closed from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday through Monday. Those days are all First Alert Weather Days because of the heat as an excessive heat warning remains in effect.
As a result of the unusually hot temperatures Arizonans are feeling in October, hiking is strongly discouraged. Still, some hikers took to the trail for the first time this year ahead of the closures.
During times when trail access is restricted, parking lot gates will be closed, and signage will be posted. Park rangers will be out to remind visitors and educate trail users about the restrictions.
