PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The Phoenix Police Department is out with a warning to pet owners.

They released body cam video from officers who found two dogs tied to poles and suffering in the heat with no food or water. The video of the sad situation was released as a reminder that it’s illegal to tether unsheltered animals.

After responding to the call for a distressed dog, officers found the two dogs suffering from heat-related injuries. They acted quickly to hose down the dogs with water and provide water in their dried bowls.

Both dogs were taken to the emergency vet. One, named Sonya, sadly died during transport, and the other, a male dog, is still recovering and was seized by animal control.

The dogs’ owner is having felony and criminal misdemeanor charges filed against him, police said.

The incident happened recently during our extended stretch of excessive heat that’s brought a long stretch of First Alert Weather Days.
