5 major Phoenix-area freeways to close for weekend construction
PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Need to get around the Valley this weekend or looking to get out of town? Beware of these construction closures that could add extra time to your travel.
According to the Arizona Department of Transportation, parts of I-17, I-10 and the Loop 202 will be shut down for ongoing construction projects. Drivers should use alternate routes or plan ahead for extra travel time.
Here are the closures for Sept. 12-15:
- Westbound Interstate 10 will close between State Route 143 and I-17 from Friday at 10 p.m. to Monday at 4 a.m. due to a traffic shift. In addition, the southbound SR 143 ramp to westbound I-10 will be closed.
- Eastbound I-10 closed between I-17 (“Stack” Interchange) and State Route 51 (“Mini-Stack” interchange) from 9 p.m. Friday to 9 a.m. Saturday for scheduled tunnel maintenance.
- Westbound I-10 closed between I-17 (“Split” Interchange) near Sky Harbor Airport and Seventh Avenue from 9 p.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday for scheduled tunnel maintenance.
- Southbound Interstate 17 will be closed at Loop 303 from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for ongoing pavement improvement work. To help keep traffic moving through the work zone, Loop 303/Sonoran Desert Drive will also be shut down under I-17.
- Westbound Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) closed between Gilbert Road and Arizona Avenue from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for widening project.
Ramps that will be closed from Friday to Monday include:
- The westbound I-10 on-ramps at Baseline and Broadway roads and 40th and 32nd streets.
- The westbound US 60 on-ramp at Mill Avenue.
- The southbound SR 143 on-ramp at University Drive.
- Southbound I-17 on-ramps at SR 74/Carefree Highway and Dove Valley Road
- Westbound Loop 202 on-ramps at Santan Village Parkway, Val Vista Drive and Lindsay Road
- Southbound SR 51 ramp to westbound I-10
- Southbound I-17 ramp to westbound I-10 near Sky Harbor Airport
- Eastbound US 60 on- and off-ramps between Gilbert and Sossaman roads
- Eastbound US 60 ramp to northbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway)
Drivers should keep in mind that the eastbound US 60 will be narrowed to three lanes between Gilbert Road and the Loop 202 from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for pavement maintenance.
Detours:
If you need to get through the westbound I-10 detour, use northbound SR 143 to westbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway). Or, drivers can also use eastbound US 60 to northbound Loop 101 (Price Freeway) and westbound Loop 202 in the Tempe area.
Need to get to the Cardinals game from the southeast Valley? ADOT says use the Loop 202 South Mountain to I-10 near 59th Avenue.
For those heading back to the Valley from northern Arizona, use the off- and on-ramps at Loop 303. Eastbound Loop 303 traffic can reach northbound I-17 by taking I-17 southbound to Happy Valley Road.
If you plan on driving in the Gilbert area on the Loop 202 Santan Freeway, exit ahead of the closure and use Germann or Pecos roads.
While it’s a short closure for eastbound I-10 between the Stack and SR 51, those that need to get to Sky Harbor late Friday or early Saturday should use I-17 and reconnect with I-10 near Sky Harbor Airport.
What if you need to use westbound I-10 near the Split? Drivers can detour on northbound SR 143 to westbound Loop 202 to reach westbound I-10. Drivers in the southeast Valley/Chandler area can also use westbound/northbound Loop 202 (South Mountain Freeway) to reach I-10 near 59th Avenue.
