PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Heads up, drivers: several freeways and busy roads will be shut down as crews continue construction work across the Valley this weekend.

According to the Arizona Department of Transportation, parts of Interstate 10 and the Loop 101 will be closed for ongoing construction projects. Drivers looking to get a glimpse of the fall leaves in northern Arizona can expect traffic delays because a section of I-17 will be narrowed to one lane.

Here are the closures scheduled for Sept. 27-30:

  • Westbound I-10 closed between Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) and US 60 from 10 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday for paving and a traffic shift.
  • Eastbound Loop 101 (Agua Fria Freeway) will be shut down between 75th and 51st avenues in the northwest Valley from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for work zone setup and pavement removal at start of a widening project.
  • Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard will shut down in both directions at Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for bridge work. Officials say Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard traffic will not be able to cross under the freeway.
  • Arizona Avenue closed in both directions at Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for pavement improvement project.

What to expect for I-17 construction:

Northbound I-17 will be narrowed to one lane between Loop 303 and State Route 74/Carefree Highway from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for pavement improvements. Eastbound Jomax Road will also be closed at I-17, and no right turns will be allowed from northbound I-17 to Jomax Road.

ADOT is also blocking off local streets to avoid cut-through traffic. Dixileta Drive will close at 27th Avenue near Phoenix’s North Gateway Transfer Station.

Officials advise drivers to stay on the freeway route and not take neighborhood streets. Drivers should consider leaving early or traveling late at night.

What detours should I take?

For those heading up to the Valley from Casa Grande or Tucson, detour on eastbound Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) to northbound Loop 101 (Price Freeway) and westbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway).

Fans heading to Sunday’s Cardinals game should use westbound and northbound Loop 202 (South Mountain Freeway) to reach I-10 near 59th Avenue.

For those heading to the northwest Valley, traffic will detour along the eastbound Loop 101 Beardsley frontage road. Drivers can also use local streets, including Union Hills Drive to northbound 51st Avenue.

If you need to exit at Frank Lloyd Wright, use frontage roads, Raintree Drive or Bell to get around the construction. For those in the East Valley who have to drive to Arizona Avenue, use McQueen Road.
