PHOENIX (AZFamily) — As the Diamondbacks continue their red-hot run to stay alive in the Wild Card race, a fan favorite has been sent down in hopes of getting back into a groove.

The D-backs announced on Wednesday morning that Alek Thomas was optioned to the Reno Aces, the team’s Triple-A affiliate, while Blaze Alexander was called up from Reno.

Thomas has been having troubles at the plate this season since coming back from the injured reserve list earlier this year. So far in August, Thomas has gone 3-20 with two RBIs. Overall this season, he is batting an average of .191 with three homers and 17 RBIs.

This is the first time in over a year that Thomas has been sent down to the minors. The team last optioned him to Reno in May 2023.

The move also makes way for more playing time for Jake McCarthy, who has been virtually unstoppable at the plate lately. So far in August, McCarthy has raked in three homers and 16 RBIs. He’s also tacked on two stolen bases.

Meanwhile’s Alexander’s move to the team will provide some extra relief for the Snakes’ infield as Ketel Marte continues to nurse an ankle sprain. Manager Torey Lovullo said Marte will not go on the injured list as of now and is considered day-to-day.

So far this season, Alexander is batting .259 with three homers and 21 RBIs.
