Got sniffles? Arizona allergists say lingering heat may be to blame
PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Arizona allergists say the lingering summer heat is creating a melting pot for allergies.
Valley allergist Dr. Sanjay Patel said this fall season is bringing trouble to those who are typically unaffected by allergens. Pollution and heat can make plants pollinate more, increasing allergy symptoms.
“We’ve been seeing a lot of people coming in who may have never recognized they have allergies before or people who have had mild symptoms but now have longer-lasting symptoms and don’t know why,” Dr. Patel said.
If you’re having a tough time, limiting outdoor exposure is key to easing symptoms. Dr. Patel says that being sensitive to what’s in the air outside can lead to coughing, sneezing and other problems.
If you’ve tried over-the-counter medicine and aren’t seeing the relief you need, it might be time to see an allergist. These doctors specialize in discovering what you’re reacting to and offering specific treatments.
Regarding what types of allergens may be affecting Valley residents, Dr. Patel says, “this time of year, we are thinking of things like rag weeds ... and even grasses that are still lingering and pollinating from the summer.”
If this heat keeps up, Dr. Patel said the rest of the fall and even winter could be rough for allergy suffers.
