PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Al McCoy, who served as the “Voice of the Suns” for over five decades, died on Saturday at 91.

Suns fan Ivan Valencia dropped off flowers and a handwritten note for McCoy outside the Footprint Center on Saturday after learning of his death.

“I feel like the least you could do for a guy who gives 51 years to your city is get him flowers when he passes,” Valencia said.

“To a lot of us we look at him like a family member pretty much because we’ve heard him for so long call these Suns games,” added another fan Julio Gonzalez.

For 51 years, from 1972-2023, McCoy was a constant presence and voice for generations of Suns fans as part of the broadcast team.

“Al McCoy is Arizona basketball, isn’t he?” said Chuck Hardt, another longtime Suns fan. “It goes without saying that he’s going to be missed.”

McCoy’s catchphrases like “Shazam!” and “Heartbreak Hotel” are engrained in the minds of Suns fans.

“When he retired, it was a sad day, but to hear the passing, you know it’s going to hit major suns fans hard,” said Gonzalez.
