Phoenix Suns to wear jersey bands honoring Al McCoy during upcoming season
PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The Phoenix Suns will pay tribute to the late Al McCoy with a special jersey band that players will wear throughout the upcoming 2024-25 NBA season.
Team officials revealed the jersey band during the annual Suns’ Media Day. Simply labeled “AL,” the black band will appear on the upper left portion of the jersey.
“Al McCoy’s voice represented the best of the Phoenix Suns organization for over five decades,” Mat Ishbia, owner of the Phoenix Suns and Phoenix Mercury, said. “The impact he had on this organization, this city, and our fans cannot be understated. This jersey band will be a reminder of Al’s enduring legacy every time we take the court.”
The legendary radio play-by-play announcer passed away peacefully at the age of 91 on Sunday, Sept. 21.
Known as the “Voice of the Suns,” McCoy called his first game on Sept. 27, 1972. He would continue in that role for 51 seasons, becoming the longest-tenured team broadcaster in NBA history.
In 2004, he became the first play-by-play announcer inducted into the Arizona Broadcasters Hall of Fame and was later inducted into the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame in 2009. He became the 15th person to be inducted into the Suns Ring of Honor in 2017.
McCoy called his last game on May 11, 2023.
