First Alert Weather Days extended through Sunday as extreme heat continues

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — It was another warm start to our morning with a low of 86 degrees, breaking the previous record warm low of 83.

An Excessive Heat Warning continues for the Valley. The high will be 108 degrees, 13 degrees above our average. This will be another high-temperature record. The old record was 107, set back in 1980.

Not only did today’s high break a daily record, but it marked our ninth day in a row of record-breaking or record-tying temperatures.

On average, we should be seeing lows in the lower 70s this time of year.

Today is also a First Alert Weather Day due to the dangerous heat. First Alert days continue through Sunday, as the Heat Warning has been extended through the weekend.

The stubborn and unseasonably strong ridge of high pressure parked over the Southwest doesn’t look to budge through the weekend, keeping temperatures very hot. Look for a high of 109 or 110 degrees Thursday through Sunday. That’s about 10 to 15 degrees above average for this time of year in Phoenix.

There may be some relief on the horizon next week. Weather models indicate a trough of low pressure could push through our region, weakening the ridge of high pressure enough to bring temperatures down.

There is some uncertainty about how strong the trough could be and how far south it would move. Both factors would influence how much we cool down across Arizona. So far, it looks like we will start to see temperatures cool down starting Tuesday and Wednesday.

We’re forecasting 106 on Tuesday, with the possibility of highs near 100 by next Wednesday. Stay cool, everyone.
