4-year-old boy discovers ‘one in a million’ blue-eyed cicada
WHEATON, Ill. (CNN) – A 4-year-old boy discovered a rare blue-eyed cicada, and experts that have been collecting the bugs for decades say it’s a first.
With this year’s re-emergence of a pair of cicada broods in full swing, billions of these red-eyed creatures are making their way above ground.
But one ultra-rare, blue-eyed cicada is making headlines in Illinois.
Jack Bailey, 4, made the super-unique discovery in his backyard in the town of Wheaton.
After snapping a few pictures, he let it go. But after realizing the rarity of the cicada, Jack and his two sisters took to the yard with flashlights and actually found the blue-eyed bug again.
The family donated the specimen to the famous Field Museum, which houses a vast collection of cicadas dating back more than a century.
And out of all those bugs, museum staff say this blue-eyed cicada is a first and are calling it “one in a million.”
