PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The official start of the monsoon is just days away!

Arizona’s Family’s Whitney Clark got a behind-the-scenes tour of one of ADOT’s pump stations near State Route 51 and Cactus Road.

The department says there are more than 50 stations across the Valley freeway system that help clear the freeways when water floods during monsoons.

ADOT says it is now using a drone for pump station inspections. The drones check for leaks, cracks or any other potential issues with pump stations.

You may remember, there have been issues with drainage along the I-17 in previous years during heavy rains. ADOT officials say just last year, a new drainage project was completed on the highway between Dunlap Avenue and Greenway Road. Smaller, older pump stations were removed and other pipelines were put in place.
