Helene delivers over 2 feet of rainfall to parts of southeast
PHOENIX (AZFamily) — In addition to devastating storm surges and damaging winds, rainfall flooding has become a huge part of Helene’s story.
On X, NOAA’s Weather Prediction Center showed one observation in Busick, North Carolina, at 29.58″ of rainfall! Some of the heavier rainfall reports ranged from 5 to 15 inches in states like Florida, Georgia, Alabama, West Virginia, South Carolina, and Virginia.
During disruptive storms like Helene, sometimes it’s hard to get an official rainfall report because equipment can fail, and it might be too dangerous for a human to go out and read a rain gauge. To help meteorologists “fill in the gaps,” RADAR is used to estimate the rainfall that has accumulated.
As of Friday morning, the RADAR estimates that around 14 inches of rainfall has already accumulated near Asheville, North Carolina, and around 10 inches has fallen in Atlanta.

Fortunately, the heavy rain starts to move out of areas like Atlanta and North Carolina on Friday. However, Helene will still bring wind and rain to areas like western Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois.
Here is a snapshot around 5 p.m. Friday.

Helene is forecast to weaken Friday night into Saturday. That being said, more rain will still fall in parts of the eastern United States.
