Registration for Arizona’s primary election closes tonight
The primary election is July 30
PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Monday, July 1, is the deadline for all voters who want to register for Arizona’s primary election.
Registration is available until midnight. Online and in-person options are available for registration.
The county recorders handle registration, but Arizonans can use the Service Arizona website to send their information to the proper county.
“If you’re in a position to go online and do it, it really is going to take you minutes because all the information you need to register is pretty much already there at the Service Arizona. It’s run through the Motor Vehicle Division for what it’s worth, but all the information is already there through your driver’s license basically,” said Arizona Citizens Clean Elections Commission Executive Director Tom Collins.
The Arizona Secretary of State’s website provides steps for using the Service Arizona website and directions for registering in person.
To vote in the July 30 primary, you must be a U.S. citizen and have been in Arizona for the past 29 days. Convicted felons are not eligible to vote.
The primary election is where citizens can vote for their political party’s candidate for the presidential election in November.
Independent voters can still vote in Arizona’s primary election.
If you are an independent voter who lives in Maricopa County, you can request a Democratic or Republican ballot through the county’s website.
If you live in another county, you must contact your county recorder’s office to specify which ballot you want to be sent to your home.
“All the testing, checks and balances and the parties themselves being involved in the process itself, all of those things make a difference to demonstrating that we have a system that’s second to none,” said Collins.
Independent voters who plan to vote in person must tell a poll worker which party ballot they want when they arrive at the polling location.
Early voting will begin in two days when counties start to mail out ballots to those on the Active Early Voter list.
